iPad 3 iOS 5.1 Jailbreak
Several jailbreakers have already jailbroken iPad 3. However, it’s still not available for public download. The very day that the new iPad was released, the iPhone Dev Team, who have been instrumental in many previous jailbreaks, announced that they had already been able to jailbreak iPad 3 iOS 5.1. They noted a few items to be aware of, including the fact that the method used to jailbreak the new iPad 3 was the exact same method used to jailbreak iPad 2 a couple of months ago, and that this method is also working for iOS 5.1. They went on to say that this method uses kernel dumps, and will allow them to get a “foot in the door” and get a jumpstart on the jailbreak.
Secondly, they alerted everyone to the fact that @ionic has tweeted pictures of his iPad 2 running a jailbreak on iOS 5.1. This is great news as well, because he used an entirely different method to do the jailbreak. This gives us a 2nd avenue which may be able to be ported to the iPad 3, since they share the same A5x processor.
The third bit of news that the iPhone Dev Team alerted us to was that a 3rd type of jailbreak was being worked on by a guy close to the Cydia repo scene who goes by the handle of @phoenixdev. This would give us not 2, but 3 distinct avenues for jailbreaking the iPad 3.

When these announcements came out, we thought that it meant the jailbreak would be imminent and would be coming out any time. However, this announcement from iPhone Dev was made on March 16th, and we still have no publicly available jailbreak. While it could come any day now, @Pod2G has indicated that it could still be 2-3 more weeks before a jailbreak for the new iPad 3 is publicly available. It seems that, despite the fact that the developers have iPad 3 jailbreaks in their possession, they’re proving to be buggy, making them unsuitable quite yet for public consumption.
There are several companies taking pre-orders for tutorials that will teach how to jailbreak iPad 3. Some of them offer some pretty great bonuses for purchasing now rather than waiting until the jailbreak is finally 100% ready. We talk about one of these offers in this post from awhile back.
Whether you decide to pre-order a jailbreak or to wait until the publicly available release comes out, there is one thing that you should note – if Apple decides to roll out an iOS version that is higher than what your iPad 3 shipped with, you should not update to it under any circumstances if you plan to jailbreak. This is because the jailbreak developers are currently trying to jailbreak 5.1, and work on any future jailbreak cannot even begin until after the new iOS is released to the general public. What’s more, if you update to, let’s say, iOS 5.1.1 or iOS 5.2 if either of those ends up being released, you’ll be unable to downgrade back to 5.1 unless you save your SHSH blobs beforehand. This is a pretty complicated procedure, and we don’t recommend it for the average user. So, just to reiterate, if a higher iOS than iOS 5.1 comes available for the new iPad 3, do not update to it under any circumstances. In fact, it might worthwhile for you to just turn off updates while you’re thinking about it. It would be awful to accidentally update to iOS 5.2 or something, and then have an iPad 3 jailbreak for 5.1 come out, and be stuck at 5.2 and not be able to take advantage of the new jailbreak.
Stay tuned, and keep checking back, and we’ll update you as soon as any more information about the iPad 3 on iOS 5.1 being jailbreak is released.
