Pod2G Announces iPad 3 Jailbreak Coming Soon!

by admin on April 18, 2012

Hey all – After nearly a month of waiting to learn how to jailbreak iPad 3, it appears that the wait may soon be over. The iOS hacker @POD2G has said that all of the exploits for an iOS 5.1 jailbreak are now in place, and that all we’re waiting on is for him to figure out how to bypass ASLR at bootup.

Pod2G Tweets About the iPad 3 Jailbreak

@ion1c has indicated that he already has an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.1 on the iPad 3, but will not release it due to the fact that he wants to be paid for it in some way. He says that he is tired of other people making money off of jailbreaks, when the devs remain poor. I, for one, support him! Tons of companies and websites make money off of the freely released jailbreaks, so why should anyone question why the developers might want to cash in?

At any rate, iClarified carried the whole story today. They indicated that when the untethered iOS 5.1 comes out, that the iPad 3 jailbreak will be included. This will be the first jailbreak for iPad 3. Thus far, as we’ve talked about before on this blog, we have a tethered jailbreak for iOS 5.1 devices such as the iPhone 4 and the iPad 1. Currently though, no jailbreak exists for the iPhone 4S, the iPad 2, or the iPad 3. The iPad 2 was previously jailbroken on iOS 5 and iOS 5.1, but anyone who upgraded to iOS 5.1 would not be able to downgrade again, and thus would be out of luck when it comes to being able to jailbreak new iPad 3.

The jailbreak that is believed to be on it’s way via @Pod2G is a userland jailbreak, and we’re hoping that it’ll be available in the next 1-2 weeks. We’ve said before that many companies are currently taking pre-orders for the iPad 3 jailbreak. This is further evidence that the jailbreak for iPad 3 is definitely in the works and should be coming soon.

These days, it’s not uncommon for a jailbreak to take over a month after a new device or iOS version is released. We’ve been lucky a couple of times in the past where a jailbreak has come out almost immediately, but with Apple getting better all the time at patching security holes and closing exploits, it seems that there is more and more work to do each time a new jailbreak has to be found. It’s possible that one day soon, Apple will get so good at patching security exploits that we’ll sometimes see iOS versions for which no jailbreak is ever found before a new iOS is released. Thankfully, it doesn’t look that that will be the case this time around.

For all who are bugging @Pod2G and @iOn1c on Twitter or via their blogs, we recommend that you don’t. These guys put a lot of work into jailbreaks, and they’ve successfully released them before. Bugging them or being “mean” isn’t going to hurry things along, and may in fact make them decide not to release the jailbreak at all. Rest assured, the jailbreak from them and possibly jailbreaks via other hackers using different exploits are in the works, and it won’t be long now before they’re released. As always, keep checking back here for the latest information on the ability to learn how to jailbreak iPad 3 on iOS 5.1.
