How to Jailbreak the New iPad

iPad 3 Jailbreak Untethered iOS 5.1Apple is calling the iPad 3 the “New iPad”. This has many people asking, “how to jailbreak new iPad” or “how to jailbreak the new iPad“? This is really just another way of asking “how to jailbreak iPad 3“, but I’m not here to split hairs. There are several ways to jailbreak the new iPad. They all revolve around downloading jailbreak software which automatically jailbreaks your new iPad 3 for you. All you have to is find the correct version of the software for your iOS, your device (the new iPad in this case) and your computer’s operating system (you have to have a PC or Mac in order to do a jailbreak).

When Apple first released the original iPad back in 2010, iPhone jailbreaks had been around for 3 years already. Many people wondered if it would actually be possible to jailbreak the iPad. They didn’t have to wait long though. Since the original iPad utilized the same processor as the iPhone of the time, the 3GS (A4 processor), it was a pretty simple issue to jailbreak iPad. The same team that’s done many of the iPhone jailbreaks was the first to jailbreak iPad 1. If you’re not familiar with them, they’re called the iPhone Dev Team (linked to above). The other team that’s been pretty crucial when it comes to jailbreaking many iDevices is the Chronic Dev Team, led by hacker Pod2G. Now, the iPad 3 jailbreak – also known as the new iPad jailbreak, is in it’s infancy. As I write this, on March 19th of 2012, the iPad 3 jailbreak is set to be released tomorrow on March 20th.

The new iPad jailbreak will be for iOS 5.1 only. If you don’t already know how it works, each new iOS version that comes out needs to be jailbroken for each specific device. The iPad 3 is shipping with iOS 5.1, so that’s the first iOS that will be jailbroken for the device. There is no easy way to downgrade the new iPad 3 to iOS 5.0.1 or iOS 5.0, and definitely no way to downgrade any further than that (why would anyone want to?), so it’s highly unlikely that there will ever be a way how to jailbreak iPad 3 on any lower iOS versions.

If You Do a New iPad 3 Jailbreak, Don’t Upgrade the iOS!

As with any jailbroken device, once you have the device jailbroken, don’t update your iOS for God’s sake! Jailbreak hackers don’t begin working on a jailbreak for new iOS versions until they are released to the general public. Even though they’re available in beta before that, the work doesn’t begin until the public release. This is because Apple can make last minute changes to the iOS that would render any exploits that they found obsolete and ruin their work.

For this reason, if you learn how to jailbreak iPad 3 iOS 5.1, you should not upgrade to the next iOS as soon as it comes out. No one knows at this point whether the next iOS will be iOS 5.1.1 or iOS 5.2. Whichever the case, if you have a jailbroken iPad 3 or jailbroken new iPad and you upgrade the day that the new iOS comes out, you will lose your jailbreak until the jailbreak hackers are able to come up with a jailbreak for the new iOS, and you will be unable to downgrade your iOS again unless you’ve saved SHSH blobs. And if you had the presence of mind to do that, you’re probably a jailbreaking nerd and don’t need to be told not to upgrade in the first place!

The new iPad jailbreak should be available tomorrow or the next day, according to the hackers @i0n1c and @phoenixdev. You’ll be able to purchase tech support and complete tutorials from a variety of vendors online.
